Semester Sum Up

  1. Question: Describe what you have learned about the process a Ceramicist goes through in creating various Forms and functions for pottery. Include your personal experience working in the art of ceramics this Semester
  1. Through the Semester I have learned techniques to use for the process a ceramicist goes through. From pinch-pots to the wheel it all has to be planned out. The first step is to draw out any ideas you have: brainstorm! Draw from any inspiration you can think of; whether your pet, the seasons, or your friends. I was inspired by places I have been in the past and have memories of. The second step is planning. If you are to make a pinch-pot you have to account for the size of clay that will fit in your hand and if combining pinch-pots, the materials needed to do so. Or if you plan to make a slab piece you have to make templates. When making the mug, I had to make templates for the cup and design a handle. The third step is to get all materials needed before starting. This is very important when using the wheel because who ever is using the wheel is covered in clay and can't grab anything. Next is the form part. After you have cut the slabs let them go from plastic to leather hard. It is easier to keep the shape this way when creating the form. I had to score each side then use slip to keep the slabs together. I also had to use some of the wooden tools to merge the sides together in order to be seamless. When making a mug or pot, I had the option to make a handle. I had to grab a ball of clay and dunk it in water then pull it until I got the length and width needed. I then twisted an pushed it to the shape I wanted and let it turn leather hard. After the form is built and is overall leather hard, I could carve out details or images I wanted, some surface decoration. Once this is all done, I let my piece turn bone dry in order to be fired in the kiln. Then I would glaze my piece and fire it once more and fawl-la it is done.

Week 16

This week I finished the mini series. I had my ring glazed as well as my pendant of the girl. The bowl was finished with the green melon glaze. I also glazed the Kenya Flag ring. Although the ring was broken I hope the when the glaze is fired it fuses together an is fixed. The heart pendants I made were fired and one was painted with acrylics. This weekend I added bead to it for a necklace.   Next week is the final so, these are the last projects of the year.

Week 15

This week I made my mini series. I made jewelry two rings, although in the drying cabinet one ring broke I will glue it after it has been fired,  two pendants with hearts, crowns, and quotes which I was going to make necklace of after, and another pendant I used my face stamp for. I also finished glazing my teapot and cube jewelry box.  They were fired and bought home. I also made another wavy bowl. It was fired and then I glazed it with melon green low fire glaze. It's waiting in the drying cabinet.

Week 14

This week I finished glazing my cube with multiple colored blues to represent the sky the bird was flying in. The inside is a mini universe. It's black with white, yellow, orange, and blue stars and in the center is the Earth; complete with water, green land, snow, and deserts. For my tea pot I am painting it canary yellow, white and black. The inside is yellow, the outside streaked in black with a white handle and spout and yellow flowers. The top is black with yellow flowers as well. I am going to start on my mini series now. I plan to make jewelry.

Week 13

This week I finished the cube project. I found a lot of words relating to of a tangent from the word fly and  carved them on the box; including the four elements. On top is a sculpted dove to be the handle. As well as I reglazed the first slab plates I made, with midnight blue and clear. I also had my teapot fired and am starting my mini series. I plan to make a tea set on the wheel starting tomorrow. Also my mug was fired twice and came out great! Its crackled blue brown and green.
